Frequently Asked Questions

Basic information

Q1

On which days are you closed?

A1

The Nasu Ropeway operates from the middle of March to the last day of November. We are not closed on any day during this period but services may be suspended due to inclement weather.

Q2

Are there times when the ropeway stops running?

A2

For safety reasons, ropeway operations will be suspended when the wind is too strong or if thunder clouds are close to Mt. Nasu. Operations will also be suspended if any abnormalities are detected during safety inspections.

Q3

How long does the trip take?

A3

Approximately four minutes.

Q4

How often do services run?

A4

Every 20 minutes (on the hour, at 20 minutes past, and then at 40 minutes past). The departure times are the same for ascending and descending services. Additional services will be added in the event not all passengers can board the same service.

Q5

What time are you open?

A5

Our usual hours are from 8:30 to 16:30.
Our operating hours are different in winter and summer. Please check our website for the exact times.

Q6

How can I obtain information about whether services are running today?

A6

Please contact us by telephone or check our Twitter feed.

Q7

Is it worthwhile riding the ropeway even though I have no intention of going hiking?

A7

Yes. Once you reach the top, you will be treated to magnificent 360-degree panoramic views. The majority of people do not go hiking after disembarking at the top.

Q8

Can I pay with credit card or e-money?

A8

Yes, but only at the base station ticket counter. We accept contactless card payments such as Suica and PASMO.

Q9

Is there a medical professional stationed on site in the event I injure myself while hiking or walking?

A9

No. Please come and see us at either station if you suffer a slight injury. We have supplies of bandages, sticking plaster, and antiseptic solution. We also have a first-aid room at the base station. If you suffer a serious injury or are unable to move, please call emergency services on 119.

Facilities

Q1

Are there any restaurants?

A1

No, but we do sell some snacks.

Q2

Can I buy souvenirs somewhere?

A2

Yes, from the store at the base station.

Q3

Is there are toilet at the summit station?

A3

Yes.

Q5

Are there any coin lockers?

A5

Yes, at both the base and summit stations. For items too large to fit inside a coin locker, the offices at both stations can look after your belongings for 500JPY per item. We ask that you do not leave any valuables inside the lockers or with the items checked in to the station office. Please also be sure to pick up your items before the end of operating hours.

Q6

Do you have a room for breast-feeding?

A6

No, but you are welcome to use the first-aid room provided it is not being used at the time.

Q7

I'd like to take my own boxed lunch, but is there somewhere I can eat it?

A7

There are tables and seats inside the summit station and at the observation deck. Some people also find spots to eat their lunch picnic-style not too far away from the hiking trail.

Clothing

Q1

I won't be hiking but what sort of clothing should I wear?

A1

Everyday clothes are fine if you are not intending to climb the mountain. That said, the temperature is about 12 degrees lower than the plains below, so carrying a long-sleeve jacket even in summer is a good idea.

Q2

Can I walk around in sandals or shoes with high heels?

A2

The area around the summit station should be fine, but we do not recommend going any further.

Sights

Q1

What can I see from the top of the ropeway?

A1

A magnificent view from an altitude of 1,684 meters and invigorating highland scenery.

Q2

I won't be hiking, so what I can do when I reach the summit station?

A2

There is an adjoining observation deck at the summit station. You can enjoy the view from there, but we also recommend taking a short walk along the hiking trail that leads from the summit station so you can fully experience the mountain atmosphere.

Other

Q1

Are there any toilets on the hiking trail?

A1

No. The last toilet for those climbing the mountain is at the summit station.

Q2

How long does it take to hike from the summit station to the top of Mt. Chausu?

A2

Around 50 minutes one way.

Q3

Can young children make the climb to the top?

A3

Generally, we do not recommend children under the age of seven to climb the mountain. There are some really big rocks on the hiking trail, so we recommend visitors with young children to walk the Ushi-ga-kubi course instead, which skirts around Mt. Chausu.
